From September 10-30th 2015, artist Tessar Lo will inhabit Project Gallery for his exhibition ‘no more doubts, no more fears,’. Transforming the gallery space into a temporary working studio and home, Lo works to achieve an immersive and free stream-of-thought mode of creating, in hopes of revealing an essence of ideation and revelation through both successful and failing attempts at making intention visible.

Sharing his artistic process with complete transparency, Lo aims to integrate and display a new level of vulnerability, creative power, and genuine expression through this exhibition. Regularly creating works on paper and canvas, as well as affecting the space through installation as well as his presence and process, Lo demonstrates how the act of creating can be an ambition, expression, and even a step towards a more abstract ideal or feeling of betterment.

Tessar Lo creates bold works driven by otherworldly, but perhaps also autobiographical narratives that explore themes of time, identity, mysticism, innocence, transformation, symbology and abstraction. Through raw and expressive forms, figures, and environments Tessar creates dream-like atmospheres where different contemporary, historic, and fictional cultures find convergence. Lo’s artist practice emphasizes process and the importance of discovery, regularly innovating his use of media and artwork format while maintaining potent recurring themes, symbols, and a clearly unique aesthetic.

Lo studied illustration at Sheridan College, and has been exhibited in group exhibition in Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami, Barcelona, Tokyo, and Amsterdam.

    ARTWORK PREVIEW

Opening Reception: Friday August 28th 2015

    Exhibition Dates: Aug 28 – Sept 9, 2015

Lex Buchanan paints scenes of fleeting moments captured in passage. Architectural spaces are presented as nostalgic experiences of the everyday, transformed into visual puzzles that challenge and disorient the viewer. The exhibition “Constructs” is a series of paintings that examine built environments and urban phenomena. Through a pastiche of historical tropes, contemporary culture, architectural forms, painterly gestures, and digital aesthetics Buchanan’s seeks to complicate notions of the contemporary landscape and the urban condition. These canvases challenge viewers in the act of deciphering new scenarios in which physical reality manifests with the ephemera of our own experiences.

Buchanan is an artist, designer, curator and alumnus of the Ontario College of Art and Design where he graduated with honors and received the Bluma Appel award and A.V. Isacc’s scholarship.  After a year of post-graduate studies in Florence, Italy Alex obtained an Advanced Certificate of Visual Studies from OCAD. His work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions both locally and internationally. He currently lives and works in Toronto where he continues to exhibit, curate and promote other local artists. Buchanan also manages the Project Gallery Studios, and is a founding member and co-director of Project Gallery.

Christina Mazzulla’s paintings critically respond to the present social constructions of reality. Using the physical environment, Mazzulla reflects on post-modern dilemmas with an emphasis on the natural world. These paintings are reminiscent of traditional Canadian landscapes such as the Group of Seven, as Mazzulla uses abstraction to achieve active surroundings that are true to the multi-layered nature of space. The series was created as an escape from the dissatisfaction and pressures caused by rapid urbanization, and in turn provide a means of coping with the vulnerability and alienation that contemporary city life can bring.

Mazzulla’s work celebrates struggle as progress. Her work provides individuals with the freedom to construct personal realities from their unique perceptions. Mazzulla creates fantasy landscapes using acrylic and aerosol as a form of empowerment, allowing viewers to express their understandings of space. These paintings work to facilitate an experience of interconnectedness, while promoting self-discovery, motivation and individual evolution.

Christina is a Toronto based painter. Since graduating from Ontario College of Art & Design in 2012, she continues her creative pursuits with like-minded artists, curators, collectives and other arts organizations. She has been showcasing work throughout Canada, and also remains active within public art sphere through various projects such as murals. Her paintings explore metaphysical environments that challenge the spatial constructs of our regular perceived reality. These multi-layered abstractions work to facilitate an experience of interconnectedness, escapism, and self-discovery.
