    ARTWORK PREVIEW

    Reception: Saturday July 12th 2014

    Exhibition: July 10 – 16, 2014

Figurative art and portraiture offer a genuine opportunity to capture the honesty of the form, beauty and imperfections of a person. The perception of what is aesthetically pleasing has evolved as the world has: throughout our history we are inherently obsessed and driven by the definition of beauty. Inevitably we have become a people overwhelmed with a false sense of body; idealistic beauty is reinforced time and again through a constant bombardment of images, symbols and rhetoric emphasized by the media, and now accessible on a global scale.

If the medium is the message, then art has the ability to challenge superficial fantasies and explore raw and intimate human aesthetics. Project Gallery offers artists the opportunity to reject previous construction of the body and creatively explore the perception of the human form, boldly redefining the sublime image. IT LOOKS HOW IT LOOKS presents artworks that explore the limitations of figurative, representational, and portraiture.

Project Gallery is proud to display diverse interpretations and depictions of both iconic and personal images that constitute the mosaic of Canadian culture. Canadiana aims to convey contemporary perspectives on Canadian identity and culture through an exploration of symbols and iconography related to living in Canada. From the iconic image of a moose to the serenity of a pristine landscape – be it natural or urban – Canadiana seeks to examine and reimagine the intricate and evolving nature of considering oneself distinctly Canadian. The exhibition will be a dynamic compilation of various understandings and representations of what it is to be Canadian, and will mirror the eclecticism that contributes to our nation’s own identity.

    open windows(web)Opening Reception: Thursday May 29th (7-11pm)

    Exhibition Dates: May 29 – June 4, 2014

OPEN WINDOWS is an exhibition featuring the artworks of Karen Decker and Victoria Taylor from May 29th to June 4th at Project Gallery. The exhibition symbolizes a “time to open our windows to the arrival of spring and fresh colourful beginnings after the heaviness of winter is finally exhausted. As well as a figurative look through a ‘glass windows’ to a view of things, as we would like them to be.”

    Karen Decker
My pieces are inspired by stain glass designs that I have encountered in Riverdale and across Toronto.  My largest piece, titled “Our Main Street” is a stain glass window as imagined from the inside looking out onto the streetscape, looking out from 790 Logan Ave (24inches x 48 inches). Tumbled coloured glass, chandelier pieces and gloss gel mediums cradle the bold colours that made up a feeling of home base.
