- OCAD Photo Thesis: ‘The Fortune of Having Been There’
27 emerging artists from OCAD University’s photography thesis program present their graduate work in the exhibition, The Fortune of Having Been There, as part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival
Toronto, ON, April 13, 2014 – The exhibition, The Fortune of Having Been There (The Project Gallery, May 14 to June 10, 2015) – showcases the work of 27 graduates of OCAD’s photography thesis program. This month long exhibition, curated into three distinct shows by students from OCAD’s Criticism and Curatorial Practices program, introduces the next generation of local artists and curators.
Volume I (May 14 – 24), curated by Tori Maas. This exhibition brings together images and objects from artists’ interactions with space and site, the landscapes they inhabit, and the tension created by the collision of public and private lives. Opening Friday May 15, 5-8pm.
Volume II (May 25 – June 2), curated by Sara Nicole England. The gateway into this exhibition is the idea of “doubling.” Included works incorporate subject matter that mirrors the “double nature” of photography; twinning, duplication, generation, imagined selves and masquerade are all at play. Opening Thursday May 28, 5-8pm.
Volume III (June 3 – 10), curated by Stephanie Peikert. As humans, we often associate ourselves with external entities in order to ground us in our journey. Exploring the relationship between individuals and objects, works in this exhibit reveal the associations, tensions and struggles inherent to identity and self-discovery. Opening Friday June 5, 5-8pm.
These events are open to the public and press. The artists and curator of each volume will be in attendance during the respective opening reception. For a full list of participating artists please view the exhibition website: ocadphotothesis2015.tumblr.com.

This exhibition will feature approximately 100 paintings, done on location, by 28 unique artist members of the Ontario Plein Air Society. The subjects vary from landscapes, urban-scapes, country-scapes, harbours and more. This exhibition shows that new twists on traditional styles such as post-impressionism, impressionism, Fauve, Canadian Impressionism are emerging in new artists as well as more seasoned artists. You’ll see paintings ranging from highly realistic to almost abstract. In all cases, there were painted sitting right in front of the subject, rain or shine.
Join us at the Artists’ Reception between 1pm and 5pm Saturday, November 22. Many of the artists will be in attendance for the reception, and there will also be prizes awarded for the top works in our show, as judged by Dalibor Dejanovic, a splendid, plein air, pastel painter.

- Deck the Walls: Dec 6-31
Opening Reception: Saturday Dec 6th, 2-6pm
Festive Reception: Thursday Dec 11th, 6-10pm
Exhibition: Dec 6-31, 2014 *EXTENDED until January 7th, 2015
Project Gallery will be hosting it’s second large-format salon style exhibition of contemporary artworks from Dec 6-31, 2014 entitled DECK THE WALLS. There will be an opening afternoon reception on Saturday Dec 6th from 2-6pm, and an evening reception the following Thursday Dec 11th from 6-10pm. The Salon exhibition style was established in 1667 in France by the Academie des Beaux-Arts and held in the Louvre. To accommodate the vast quantity of work submitted by students of the Academie, artworks were displayed from floor to ceiling with little space separating frames. This style has since been incorporated throughout history in museums and galleries, including the Art Gallery of Ontario’s display of its European collection. Project Gallery will be integrating this historic exhibition style for the second time with the gallery’s walls strategically filled with over 500 artworks that are 12” x 12” or smaller.
Featuring over 850 artworks by 156 artists:
